Biden-Harris Administration Takes New Steps to Lower Health Care Costs As Trump Pushes to Increase Costs and Take Away Coverage
April 14, 2024 | Posted In: OCDP News

On March 28, as part of his agenda to lower health care costs for American families, President Biden announced major steps toward cracking down on junk health insurance for American families and consumers. The President is committed to building on the promise of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its critical consumer protections that ensure meaningful coverage for people’s health care needs.

After former President Trump extended the duration of short-term junk insurance plans in an attempt to weaken the ACA, the Biden-Harris administration is issuing a final rule that makes sure Americans aren’t scammed into low-quality coverage that leaves consumers on the hook for thousands of dollars in medical bills or denies lifesaving care right before treatment.

If Donald Trump wins, he will take us backwards on health care. Trump is promising to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act, which would eliminate protections for quality insurance.

Trump and Republicans’ extreme plans to gut health care for millions of Americans include:

  • Ripping away the health care of as many as 45 million people enrolled through the ACA
  • Threatening coverage and care for an additional over 60 million Americans with Medicaid
  • Gutting health care protections for 100 million Americans with pre-existing conditions like cancer, asthma and diabetes
  • Raising premiums and health care costs by thousands of dollars a year for millions of Americans
  • Allowing insurance companies to rip off Americans with junk insurance products
  • Raising seniors’ prescription drug costs by hundreds of dollars per year
  • Gutting Medicare

President Biden and Vice President Harris believe health care is a right, not a privilege, and since day one, the Biden-Harris administration has delivered health care to millions more Americans while also lowering health care costs.

Over the last three years, the Administration has:

  • Taken on Big Pharma to lower prescription drug costs and cap insulin at $35 a month for seniors
  • Made affordable health care more accessible by making it easier for people to find and enroll in health care plans
  • Lowered ACA premiums, saving millions of Americans an average of $800 per year
  • Enabled more Americans to obtain insurance coverage than under any other president—achieving record low uninsured rates
  • Expanded access to mental health care
  • Prevented one million surprise medical bills every month
  • Continued to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid from extreme MAGA attacks

This November, the choice is clear: between Trump and MAGA Republicans, who have repeatedly stated they will take away coverage and cut benefits, and President Biden and Vice President Harris, who will keep doing everything they can to ensure more Americans continue to have access to affordable, high-quality health care and the peace of mind that comes with it.
