A right-wing citizens' group, AxMITax, is now circulating a petition to get a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would eliminate property taxes in Michigan.

If you are approached by someone asking you to sign a petition to eliminate your property taxes, DO NOT SIGN.

This plan would cut more than $2.5 BILLION from the state budget for schools and would end local tax support in Otsego County (see your winter tax bill) for the library, sportsplex, county park, and commission on aging, and more services such as animal control, bus and ambulance, and recycling.

It also would require 60% of voters to approve any local tax and a two-thirds majority in the Legislature to approve raising any state tax by more than 0.1% over five years.
