Democrats regained their majority in the Michigan House in two special elections on Tuesday, April 16, restoring our party’s full control of state government.
Democrat Mai Xiong won the 13th state House district's special election with 65% of the vote, according to unofficial results, and Democrat Peter Herzberg won 60% of the vote in the 25th state House district's special election.
In the 2022 midterm elections, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer won reelection and Democrats flipped both chambers of the Michigan Legislature, giving our party a governing trifecta for the first time in 40 years.
“These seats allow Democrats to continue fighting for a brighter future for all Michiganders,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “The far-right extremists like Matt Hall that lead the MIGOP in the legislature have done nothing but stand in the way of progress on all the issues that matter most to Michiganders, from abortion rights to health care to our democracy and so much more.”
Every seat in the Michigan House of Representatives is up for election this November. And Democrats believe there are several vulnerable Republican seats available for pickup that would ensure Gov. Whitmer has the solid Democratic majorities she needs to continue delivering results for all Michiganders.
“Michigan Democrats are committed to showing up and earning every vote all across Michigan to ensure we are able to build on all of our achievements in the face of the MAGA MIGOP,” Barnes said. “To be clear, in the fight to reject Donald Trump’s MAGA extremism, Democrats are holding Republicans accountable from the bottom to the top of the ballot.”
