Jack's No. 1 Job in Congress: Keeping the Gun Lobby Happy
October 9, 2024 | Posted In: Election Updates

When Rep. Jack Bergman is running for re-election, he loves to talk about safer communities and violent crime.

He loves to blame it on immigrants. He loves to blame it on mental health issues. And he loves to blame it on the Biden-Harris administration.

But what Jack Bergman and other MAGA Republicans in Congress fail to mention is that according to FBI data, from 2022 to 2023 our country had the largest decline in murders in decades. So far this year, violent crime has continued to steadily decline. And yes, all of this was under President Biden’s leadership. And communities across our country are safer now than when Biden took office.

In contrast, homicides rose by over 30 percent under Donald Trump. It was the biggest increase in murder rates on record.

If Jack Bergman is concerned about violent crime, then working across the aisle to end our nation’s gun violence crisis should be his number one priority. Instead, he is one of the many extreme members of the House and Senate who are blocking votes on lifesaving gun safety legislation—all for the sake of keeping the gun lobby happy.

Here’s the Biden-Harris record on gun violence prevention. They passed the American Rescue Plan--despite every Republican in Congress voting against it--which has helped deliver over $15 billion in public safety funding that enabled over 1,000 state, city, and county governments to avoid cuts to police budgets, invest in community violence interventions, and keep communities safe.

And they have taken more action to get illegal guns off of our streets and out of dangerous hands than any Administration, including by signing into law the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in nearly 30 years which has expanded background checks and cracked down on gun traffickers.

Even among these historic declines, the Biden-Harris Administration continues to do more, recently announcing additional actions to combat machinegun conversion devices, improve school-based active shooter drills, and take other steps to reduce gun crime and save lives.

And President Biden will continue to urge Congress to pass his plan to fund 100,000 additional police officers, invest in community violence intervention programs, and make commonsense gun safety reforms, including banning assault weapons. We can count on Jack Bergman to vote no.

Jack Bergman doesn’t care about the needs of his district. The fact is, he’s ignored us for the past eight years, except when it’s election time, and he’s spent more time protecting the interests of his corporate donors, including the gun lobby, rather than showing up and listening to the people he was elected to serve.

We know that one of the best ways to fight crime is to enact commonsense gun safety legislation. But if we want this to happen, we must replace gun lobby-backed elected officials, including Jack Bergman, with gun violence prevention champions. It’s time to elect Callie Barr to Congress!
