Rep. Jack Bergman doesn’t represent the values we care about. He’s consistently stood with extremists who want to roll back reproductive healthcare access, even supporting policies that could criminalize doctors and restrict women’s rights to make their own healthcare decisions.
That’s not what the women of Michigan’s 1st Congressional District need.
Here in Upper and Northern Michigan, we value our independence, our right to make personal decisions without government interference, and the protection of our fundamental freedoms. But Bergman’s out-of-touch agenda doesn’t reflect these values. It’s time we get him out of Congress.
Reproductive care, contraception, the right to choose--Rep. Bergman wants to take it all away. He has publicly claimed that the federal government should have no role in abortion decisions. But his votes tell a much different story. And when you add it up, it’s three strikes and you’re out.
Just take a look at Bergman’s track record on women's rights:
STRIKE 1: Bergman sponsored H.R. 705, the ‘Heartbeat Protection Act,’ a federal abortion ban that would punish medical providers for up to five years if they perform an abortion after six weeks. Nationwide. In every state.
STRIKE 2: Bergman sponsored H.R. 431, the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ which would provide “equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person.” This would federally restrict IVF and ban abortion. Nationwide. In every state.
STRIKE 3: Bergman also has also voted against bills that proclaim women should have the right to contraception. And even worse, Bergman signed a legal brief supporting returning to the Comstock Act.
The Comstock Act prohibits the mailing of "obscene, lewd, or lascivious materials" or items "intended for the prevention of conception or procuring of abortion." When signed into law in 1873, thousands were arrested, including for the lewd behavior of "writing a letter to somebody asking them for a date if they weren't married." The law also includes outlawing items "intended for the prevention of conception," which is birth control of all types. Because everything is transported by mail or a common carrier, it could be used to effectively ban all birth control. Nationwide. In every state.
For women's rights, reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy, and medical privacy, Bergman's oppressive reign needs to end. We cannot allow Bergman and other anti-abortion Republicans to carry out Trump’s extreme Project 2025 agenda--jeopardizing everything from abortion to IVF.
It’s on us to defeat them and their radical agenda. If Donald Trump and the GOP gain full power of the federal government, make no mistake, they will quickly move to make state draconian laws national.
Women in Upper and Northern Michigan deserve better. Women in Michigan deserve better. Women across the country deserve better. It’s time for a new generation of leaders. It’s time to elect Callie Barr to Congress.
