Prior to May 6, 1954, no one had ever run a 4-minute mile. The general consensus was that it was physically impossible. Experts believed the human body was "just not capable of it." They even went as far to insist "his lungs may explode and he would certainly die." That belief rang true for decades, and during this time hundreds of athletes continued to fail to break this barrier.
On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister ran the miracle mile in 3:59:4. In doing so, he didn't only break a world record -- he broke a limiting belief in the minds of all elite runners. The four-minute mile was now possible. Today, of course, running a sub-four-minute mile is commonplace. You see, when you believe you can do something, you are going to do it. It’s as simple as that.
Frank Lloyd Wright said it another way, “The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.”
Here’s what we really believe in:
- We believe that when America leads with humility, compassion and integrity the rest of the world follows.
- We believe democracy demands a quality education, to which every American has a right.
- We believe the right to vote forms the basis of our democracy, and it is incumbent upon every American to ensure that no citizen is denied that right.
- We believe our liberty depends on freedom of the press. Without it, all other liberties are endangered.
- We believe that guaranteeing equal pay for women benefits everyone.
- We believe we are stronger when we have an economy that works for everyone; providing incomes for working people, creating good-paying jobs, and putting a middle-class life within reach for every American.
- We believe in protecting every American’s right to retire with a dependable foundation of income by protecting the taxes they have paid into Social Security and Medicare programs.
- We believe that climate change poses a real and urgent threat to our economy, our national security, and our children’s health and futures.
- We believe every individual has the right to make decisions regarding their own body.
- We believe in affordable health care for all Americans
- We believe in the separation of church and state as established by the founding fathers.
- We have the will and we won’t stop believing until we’ve made these things happen. Our hope is that you’ll join us…
